Michael C. Pennotti, Ph.D.

Michael Pennotti is Industry Professor and SDOE Fellow in the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management of the Charles V. Schaefer School of Engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology.  He is also a member of the faculty of the Center for Management Development at Rutgers University.

As a systems engineering leader for more than thirty years, Mike has broad experience with both technical and organizational systems.  During a twenty year career at Bell Laboratories, he worked on the design, analysis, and operational improvement of three generations of anti-submarine warfare systems for the United States Navy.  From 1984 to 1990 he was Director of Advanced ASW Concepts at Bell Labs.

In 1990, Mike shifted his focus from R&D to broader business issues and, for the next ten years, applied systems engineering principles and methods to the solution of management problems while serving on the senior leadership teams of three different businesses at AT&T and Lucent Technologies.  As Quality Director for AT&T Business Communications Systems, he led the $3.5B unit to a Baldrige site visit in 1996.  As Human Resources Vice President for Lucent’s Enterprise Networks Group, he helped develop and execute people strategies to support doubling that business from 1997 to 2000.  As VP Quality for Avaya, he established the initial business processes for the $8B spin-off from Lucent in 2000.

Mike also works as an independent consultant, applying the principles of process management and performance improvement to the solution of business problems, particularly those of early stage, high-tech companies.

Dr. Pennotti is a member of the International Council on Systems Engineering, a senior member of both the IEEE and the American Society for Quality, and a trustee of Caldwell College.   He holds Ph.D. and MS degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Polytechnic Institute of New York, a BEE from Manhattan College, and is a graduate of the AEA/Stanford Executive Institute for the management of high-technology companies.
